Centurion University’s Dr Pratyush Kumar Das Clinches 3rd Prize at National Innovation Challenge

In a resounding triumph for Centurion University, Dr. Pratyush Kumar Das, an esteemed Assistant Professor in the School of Agricultural and Bio Engineering, has secured the third prize in the ‘Ideation Category’ at the national-level ILS Innovation Challenge. The competition, organized by DBT – Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) and supported by BIRAC, DST-Govt. of Odisha, and Start-up Odisha, witnessed fierce competition from across the nation, with Dr. Das’s groundbreaking innovation, ‘Polymer-functionalized Bio Beads Enriched Soil Amendment (PBEA) for Paddy Cultivation in Cr (VI) Contaminated Soils,’ emerging as one of the top contenders.

The award ceremony took place on September 26, 2023, during the inaugural session of the Life Science Start-up Summit at ILS, Bhubaneswar. Dr. Pratyush Kumar Das, along with his teammate, Mr. Gyanendra Prasad Panda of DBT-ILS, was honoured for their outstanding contribution to the field of bioscience and biotechnology.

The ILS Innovation Challenge, hosted by the incubation centre at DBT – Institute of Life Sciences, marked a pioneering endeavour to encourage students, scholars, and scientists to explore innovative ideas and solutions in the realm of bioscience and biotechnology. This nationwide competition provided a platform for aspiring start-ups and individuals to showcase their innovations, engage with industry experts and scientists, and ultimately foster the development of entrepreneurial ventures aimed at societal benefit.

Dr. Das’s award-winning innovation addresses a critical environmental issue – the presence of toxic Cr (VI) in soil, primarily originating from mining and industrial activities. This contamination not only jeopardizes agricultural productivity but also poses significant health risks to humans through the consumption of contaminated rice crops. Dr. Pratyush Kumar Das’s pioneering solution involves the use of specific biodegradable polymers in conjunction with targeted microbial species. This unique blend serves as a soil conditioner or an additive to organic compost, enhancing rice growth by promoting nitrogen fixation at the root-soil interface. Moreover, it plays a pivotal role in mitigating the accumulation of the toxic heavy metal, chromium, in rice plants, thereby ensuring the production of safe and uncontaminated rice.

Speaking about his achievement, Dr. Pratyush Kumar Das expressed his gratitude to Centurion University for its support and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing pressing environmental challenges. He stated, “This recognition underscores the significance of interdisciplinary research and innovative thinking in the field of agriculture and environmental science. Our work holds the promise of sustainable agricultural practices and a healthier future for communities affected by heavy metal contamination.”

Dr. Das’s remarkable success serves as a testament to Centurion University’s commitment to nurturing excellence and fostering innovation in its academic community. His groundbreaking research not only advances the boundaries of science but also contributes to the well-being of society by addressing a critical environmental concern. His innovative solution holds the potential to transform farming practices and protect both the environment and human health.

Centurion University Empowering Odisha’s Agriculture Landscape Sustainably with APICOL

In a significant stride towards bolstering Odisha’s agricultural sector, Centurion University of Technology and Management has proudly announced its long-term partnership with APICOL (Agricultural Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited), a Government of Odisha undertaking under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment. This collaboration not only aims to provide valuable assistance to agricultural enterprises in the state of Odisha but also aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering a ray of hope and prosperity to countless farmers and aspiring agri-entrepreneurs.

Empowering Odisha’s Agri Entrepreneurs: A Sustainable Vision

At the heart of this partnership lies the commitment to nurturing the next generation of agri-entrepreneurs. Under the umbrella of the Agri Entrepreneurship Promotion Scheme (AEPS) of APICOL, Centurion University will play a pivotal role in training individuals from 12 different districts in Odisha. By focusing on skill development, sustainable agricultural practices, and entrepreneurship, this partnership directly addresses multiple SDGs. It seeks to reduce poverty (SDG 1) by equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge to become successful agri-entrepreneurs. The emphasis on innovation in agricultural practices also aligns with SDG 9, promoting industry, innovation, and infrastructure development.

Furthermore, the partnership strives to achieve zero hunger (SDG 2) by improving agricultural productivity, enhancing food security, and reducing hunger in the state. By revitalizing rural economies and communities, it indirectly supports sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11).

Sustainability is a common thread throughout the training programs, aligning with SDG 13 (Climate Action). Sustainable agriculture practices are vital in combating climate change, and the partnership emphasizes these practices to minimize the environmental footprint of farming.

The Vision for the Future: A Sustainable and Prosperous Odisha

This partnership between Centurion University and APICOL epitomizes collaboration for progress, embodying the spirit of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By joining forces, they are working towards shared goals and addressing pressing issues related to agriculture and rural development, both at the local and global levels.

As these agri-entrepreneurs graduate from their training programs and step into the field, they hold the promise of transforming Odisha’s agricultural landscape sustainably. Their endeavours contribute not only to the state’s overall growth and prosperity but also to the global pursuit of a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for all. Together, they are sowing the seeds of a brighter, more sustainable future for Odisha’s agriculture, subtly weaving the principles of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals into their endeavours.

Centurion University’s Mini Kisan Mela 2023: Cultivating Sustainable Futures

In a world increasingly aware of the delicate balance between human activities and the environment, an extraordinary event unfolded in the quaint village of Old Kerandi, Gosani, on September 12, 2023. The students of B.Sc. Agriculture at the M.S. Swaminathan School of Agriculture (MSSSOA), Centurion University, are orchestrating the Mini Kisan Mela, a testament to their commitment to sustainable practices.

This gathering represents more than just a marketplace for agricultural products; it’s a nuanced nod to the global effort to nurture our planet’s fragile ecosystems. In the heart of rural India, the event fosters a sense of harmony between humans and nature. Through innovative practices and eco-friendly products, it encourages a balance that aligns with the essence of SDG 15—preserving terrestrial ecosystems without explicitly stating so. The Mini Kisan Mela showcases sustainable technologies and farming methods, subtly steering participants towards a future where land degradation is halted and biodiversity thrives. It’s a forward-looking event without explicitly declaring its alignment with SDG 15’s goals.

By facilitating knowledge exchange among farmers and students, the event empowers attendees to make informed decisions that can potentially reverse environmental damage. It’s about sowing the seeds of change The direct marketing opportunities offered to farmers and agri-input dealers indirectly contribute to SDG 15 by enhancing local economies. It’s about building sustainable communities and ecosystems without explicitly naming the goal. Mini Kisan Mela subtly cultivates awareness among farmers and visitors regarding the importance of sustainable land use and responsible agricultural practices. It’s a silent call to action for the preservation of terrestrial ecosystems without directly referencing SDG 15.

The Mini Kisan Mela, organized by enterprising students, is a remarkable endeavour that subtly echoes the principles of SDG 15. It doesn’t overtly spotlight the global goal but quietly embodies its spirit through the promotion of sustainable agriculture and eco-friendly practices. This event, set in the heart of rural India, serves as a gentle reminder that every action we take to nurture our planet’s health brings us one step closer to a greener and more harmonious world.
