Green Facilities
Centurion University strives to be an energy-efficient, sustainable and carbon neutral institution. To achieve this, the University has taken up a number of steps and measures. The Campus has an on-grid solar power plant which powers the University’s market complex. It will gradually increase capacity to extend to other areas. The University has made efforts to rejuvenate the flora and fauna by building a ‘Butterflies, Bees and Cactus’ garden to promote the in-situ ecosystem, which hosts several species of butterflies. The garden was designed to attract bees and promote their natural reproduction. The garden also has a wonderful and thriving apiary that nurtures many beehives. Similarly, an in-situ aquatic ecosystem has been built in beautiful aquariums that promote and teach about the life of ornamental fish. Besides adding to the beauty of the Campus, which is an additional bonus, these aquariums are visually explicit schools that are meant to inspire micro entrepreneurs. Centurion University manufactures its own intra-campus transit electric power and solar powered vehicles, with the aim to keep the carbon footprint at the minimum. The University has also established machines like the Biodigester and Sewage Treatment Plant to reduce waste.
Biodigester
The University has installed biodigesters which convert food waste into manure to promote the growth and diversity of the flora on its verdant Campus. The biodigester, which is used to minimize waste, and in turn, the overall carbon footprint produces ready-to-use manure and soil nutrients every day. This also eliminates the need to use chemical fertilizers for the plants and trees in the Campus.
Sewage Treatment Plant
The Campus has an on-grid solar power plant which powers the University’s market complex. It also manufactures vehicles that run on solar power. The University promotes green energy initiatives among its students and community so as to curb the rapid depletion of the non-renewable resources.
Butterfly, Bees and Cactus Garden
The Butterfly, Bees and Cactus Garden is a flourishing and thriving terrestrial ecosystem built by the University to support the local biodiversity and natural pollination systematically and efficiently. Butterflies and bees are major pollinators which support plant life and ecosystems. The garden was built to promote breeding and life of butterflies and bees, while at the same time raise awareness of their importance to the entire planet and environment sustainability at large. The Cactus in the garden, besides adding immensely to the beauty of the Campus, helps remove the pollutants and purifies the surrounding air.
Aquarium
An in-situ aquatic ecosystem has been built in beautiful aquariums that promote and teach about the life of ornamental fish. Besides adding to the beauty of the Campus, which is an additional bonus, these aquariums are visually explicit schools that are meant to inspire micro entrepreneurs.
Sustainable Farming Facility
The University aligns itself to different Sustainable Development Goals and adheres to sustainable Farming Practices like Zero Tillage Farming, Rainwater Harvesting, Drip Irrigation, Organic Farming, Vermicomposting, Mushroom cultivation, Azola cultivation, Aquaculture, Automated polyhouses and Tissue Culture Lab. All these facilities are designed with the intention to augment productivity while keeping the Campus Carbon Neutral.
Organic Farming
Improving on indigenous practices and knowledge, the University promotes, practices and imparts knowledge on organic farming. Organic farming is being practiced in the Campus as well as in the villages adopted by the University in collaboration with NSDC. Thousands of farmers’ families have benefitted from this initiative.
Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting is yet another effort taken up by the University to reduce waste and go organic with in-house agriculture. The University provides farmers with hands-on training in the various stages of vermicompost production. The compost produced is used as natural fertilizer, which vastly improves the quality and yield of the crops.
Aquarium
An in-situ aquatic ecosystem has been built in beautiful aquariums that promote and teach about the life of ornamental fish. Besides adding to the beauty of the Campus, which is an additional bonus, these aquariums are visually explicit schools that are meant to inspire micro entrepreneurs.
Waste Reuse and Recycle Facilities
The University’s cardinal credo is ‘Reduce (wastage), Recycle (natural resources) and Reuse (natural resource)’. The many initiatives such as Biodigester, Pavers Manufacturing Unit, Chalk Manufacturing Unit, Cloth Manufacturing Unit (Sangam Designs) transforms waste products to valuable resources like manures, paver blocks and many others.
Percolation Tank
Percolation tanks have been constructed in the Campus to collect runoff surface water generated from roads, adjacently situated hills, experimental crop fields and roof water of all the buildings situated in the campus. These percolation tanks augment the quantity and help in improving the quality of the groundwater.
Chalk Manufacturing
The environment-friendly dust-free chalk is made of locally sourced raw materials, which encourages and promotes local micro-enterprises. Using chalk has minimized, if not eliminated the use of markers and white boards, which create plenty of harmful waste through the plastic of the pens, besides the high-cost and carbon footprints for sourcing it.
Paper Unit
Tons of paper are discarded every day. The University has its own paper recycling unit which is used not only for the campus but also for the community. This initiative has been taken up as an endeavour to reduce waste. The recycled paper is further used to produce various products such as notebooks and boxes. The University conducts workshops in which they demonstrate how paper is recycled with the aim of raising awareness for the environment.
Paver Block Manufacturing
Pavers are manufactured from non-recyclable and non-biodegradable waste products, mainly plastic, in an effort to curb soil and water-table pollution and provide a viable method to dispose of such environmentally harmful waste products. The pavers are used in-house, reducing dependency on the market and they are also sold in the market, promoting awareness about the process as a method to put good use to non-biodegradable materials, towards a more sustainable and environment friendly solution.
Sanitation Facilities
Incinerators
The University has installed solid waste incinerators to reduce the quantity of waste. Incinerators help in reducing pollution as compared to Landfills and it prevents the production of harmful gases such as Methane. It also helps in detoxifying biological, pathologically contaminated and other toxic wastes.
Sewage Treatment Plant
The Campus has an on-grid solar power plant which powers the University’s market complex. It also manufactures vehicles that run on solar power. The University promotes green energy initiatives among its students and community so as to curb the rapid depletion of the non-renewable resources.
Water Bodies
The University has its very own pond in the campus which is a home to various waterfowl like ducks and geese as well as to various fishes. The University provides training, conducts workshops and promotes micro entrepreneurship by example and builds awareness regarding the best practices towards environment friendly means for livelihoods. The waterbody promotes restoration of local flora and fauna as well. The elimination of chemicals has made the habitat more healthy and life-friendly which in turn has encouraged the return of local birds to the area.
