Department of Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is considered to be the most versatile branch among all the engineering branches. It is the branch with a lot of diversity from geotechnical engineering to structural engineering, environmental to hydraulics, transportation to hydrology; Civil Engineering can be considered as a single largest branch among all the engineering branches.

Civil Engineering in Centurion University is offered in both the campuses at Parlakhemundi and Bhubaneswar. The department has some of the most senior faculty members drawn from retired professors from Orissa and AP. It has also professors who have been Chief Engineers of the state. The pedagogy is a mix of theory and practice. Like all departments, Civil also has about 60% practical component in its curriculum.

The department offers courses at undergraduate level, graduate level (Structural Engineering, Hydraulics and Transportation Engineering). The main areas of research include Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Hydrology, GIS and GPS Systems.

MISSION

Be a repository of knowledge and skills in the area of appropriate and environmentally sustainable Civil Engineering.

VISION

Preparing skilled, employable manpower appropriate to service developing societies in Civil engineering. Promote practice based, community oriented pedagogy Undertake research in the field of sustainable water and Land Management

WHAT IS CBCS?

Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is a system adopted in Centurion University which gives flexibility to the students to choose any subject of their own choice irrespective of their department. In CBCS, the subjects will be in different baskets having different credits. A student should complete a minimum of 180 credits to accomplish his engineering. A student can also opt for dual degree. In dual degree a student has to choose subject from basket 4. In other words, a student has to do a course of 45 credits additional to 180 credits. He will get a certificate of dual degree at the end of 4 years of his/her B.Tech program. The baskets are here as follows:

Basket 1 – This basket has courses from Basic Science and it contains 10% of total credits i.e. 18 credits. It is an open basket.

Basket 2 – This basket carries courses from Humanities and Management. It also contains 10% of total credits i.e. 18 credits. It is an open basket.

Basket 3 – This basket contains fundamental courses from all branches of engineering. It carries 15% of total credits out of which 5% of total credits from other branches i.e. 27 credits. It is an open basket.

Basket 4 – The basket 4 carries the core subjects of civil engineering. It has 25% of the total credits i.e. 45 credits.

Basket 5 – This basket carries domain courses from all branches. It has 40% of the total credits i.e. 72 credits. It is an open basket to all branches of engineering. Each domain consists of 36-40 credits including project and Internship of 10 credits. Students are encouraged to take any domain of their choice. They are also allowed to go to various industries and work to get exposure in field.

Domains Construction Planning & Project management Surveying & GIS Planning, Design and Drawing Construction Planning & Project Management deals with the subjects which are very much essential for a Civil Engineer in field during construction of any structures. After planning and designing of any structure, the most important part of a civil engineer is to look after the quality of the construction and to ensure that the construction is done as per the plan and the design provided. He has to also check that the site investigations are carried out properly so that the structure should be avoided to get collpased.

Domain Objectives:

To develop competency among students in construction project management techniques and skills. To impart knowledge required for ensuring quality control in construction industry. To shape the students towards combating various risks involved in the construction industry and ensure safety measures.

To apprise the importance of maintenance of buildings in general and renovations of heritage structures in particular.

To educate the students on the significance and need of modernizing the constructional activities through implementation of advanced constructional methods like adaptation to prefab technology.

To make the graduating student better estimate the project cost and manage the project finances judiciously.

To make the student able to schedule the project and manage the materials effectively and become a successible project manager.

Able to prepare the quality checks and inspection processes towards quality control and quality assurance.

Able to carry out the risk analysis and plan & implement the safety measures in the proposed project.

Able to generate various documents and reports of project planning and management using MS Project software.

Able to prepare the tender documents for constructional works and specify the contract conditions towards preparation of a contract agreement.

Domain Outcomes:

At the end of the domain training the students will be

Able to plan a project involving constructional activities through need based functional planning; software based structural design using relevant software.

Able to prepare a schedule of activities, both major and minor that are required to be carried out for project execution.

Able to identify the resources (Equipment, human resources and material) required for project execution and scheduling the same for effective project implementation.

The Labs Include:

Material Testing Lab

This lab plays a vital role in civil engineering to know about the materials in the civil Engineering. Materials are tested for diverse purposes to determine the properties of the raw material like Bricks, Cement and Aggregates. The main Objective of this lab is to know the basic properties like strength on bricks, Initial and Final Setting time of cement, Fineness of cement, Permeability of Cement and Crushing strength of Aggregates.

Transportation Laboratory

Transportation engineering is the application of technology and scientific principles to the planning, functional design, operation and management of facilities for any mode of transportation in order to provide for the safe, efficient, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods. Handle the planning, design, construction, and operation of highways, roads, and other vehicular facilities as well as their related bicycle and pedestrian realms. Estimate the transportation needs of the public and then secure the funding for the project. Analyze locations of high traffic volumes and high collisions for safety and capacity. Use civil engineering principles to improve the transportation system. Utilizes the three design controls which are the drivers, the vehicles, and the roadways themselves.

  • Geotechnical Laboratory
  • Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
  • Surveying Laboratory
  • Concrete Structure Laboratory
  • Environmental engineering lab helps in the pollution prevention as air, water and noise testing is done in the lab. As a result of these tests, various remedies can be suggested to reduce the environmental pollution. The purpose of this lab is to make the students aware of the dangerous effects of environmental pollution. With these tests environmental protection agency can keep a check on the hazardous emissions by any industry and can protect health of common man, water toxicity, and land air pollution.

CAD Lab

computer Aided Drafting is a process of preparing a drawing of an object on the screen of a computer. There are various types of drawings in different fields of engineering and sciences. In the field of civil engineering, plans and layouts of the buildings are prepared. In all fields of engineering use of computer is made for drawing and drafting. The main objective of CAD process to provide enhanced graphics capabilities which allows any designer to Conceptualize his ideas to modify the design very easily, Perform animation ,Make design calculations and other aesthetic features.
